As of 1.804

First, drag the file from the media explorer in to the track view. You will get this box:

Import midi 1.png

choose "yes"

then the files will be split out for you:

(sometimes it doesnt give each channel its own track, as we see here, but its still dead easy to assign the new items tracks)

Import midi 2.png

So now we want to butt everything against the beginning of the left side, and also to get those stray files to line up, it's really easy! Just butt them against the left side:

Import midi 3.png

this is what it should look like when you're done:

Import midi 5.png

now, if you want to preview using your predefined midi output

(learn about setting midi outputs here: Recording_MIDI#Setting_up_a_hardware_output

you can do this by selecting all the tracks that you want to preview, and right clicking on the routing knob to reveal this menu:

Midi impiort 6.png

select your hardware output here and all the other tracks will follow suit, now you can play it with your on-board synth to hear what's going on, but can later turn off that output and replace with whatever vsti you wish!

happy importing!
