ReaRoute Installation

ReaRoute is an ASIO driver that allows you to route audio to and from any other ASIO enabled application. ReaRoute is only installed on your system if you select the ReaRoute ASIO driver during the REAPER installation process. This was originally Reaper's alternative to 'Rewire' which is now a feature of Reaper.

If you wish to use ReaRoute and you did not select it the first time you installed REAPER, you can run the installation program again, choosing ReaRoute ASIO driver when the Choose Components window appears.


NOTE: Some users have reported problems with native ASIO drivers after installing the ReaRoute driver. If you experience problems with your ASIO drivers after installing this feature, uninstall REAPER, then re-install with this check box cleared.


When you choose to install ReaRoute, the ReaRoute ASIO driver appears in the ASIO driver list for the other audio applications on your system.

The following procedure shows how to use ReaRoute to send audio to and from AudioMulch. This program has the ability to access ReaRoute Inputs and Outputs, and as such you can use either REAPER or AudioMulch as a "pass-through" device - utilizing the processing capabilities of one or both programs, either live or as part of a recording. For example - you may wish to transfer an AudioMulch project to REAPER to add some live instruments and then mixdown, or you may wish to send some audio from REAPER through AudioMulch in order to use its filters as an effect.

Although AudioMulch is used in this example, the same concepts apply when using ReaRoute with any ASIO compatible program.


NOTE: Before using ReaRoute, it is best to clear the check box next to Close audio device when stopped and application is inactive on the Audio Preferences page of REAPER (Options > Preferences > Audio). This will help to prevent conflicts when moving between applications.


Setting up AudioMulch to use the ReaRoute ASIO driver

1. Open REAPER. NOTE: It is vitally important to open REAPER first, and close REAPER last, when using the ReaRoute driver, when Reaper is to be used as the 'Master' application.

2. Open AudioMulch.

3. In AudioMulch, select Edit > Settings.

4. Select Audio Driver.

5. Select ASIO as the Driver type.

6. Select ReaRoute ASIO as the ASIO Device.

7. Select Audio Input.

8. Map the ReaRoute ASIO inputs to the AudioMulch Inputs and Channels that you wish to use.

9. Select Audio Output.

10. Map the ReaRoute ASIO outputs to the AudioMulch Outputs and Channels you wish to use.

AudioMulch is now setup to use the ReaRoute Inputs and Outputs you have selected.


Receiving audio from AudioMulch in REAPER

1. Insert the number of new Tracks you require in REAPER.

2. Record-arm the first Track you wish to use then right-click on the Input Meter and select the ReaRoute Input Channel(s) you wish to assign to the Track.

Repeat this step for each AudioMulch output you wish to route to REAPER.


Sending audio from REAPER to AudioMulch

1. Open the Routing window for the first Track that you wish to send to AudioMulch.

2. In the Audio ReaRoute Outputs section, select the check box(es) next to the ReaRoute channel(s) you wish to use to send the Track to.

3. In AudioMulch, create SoundIn or AuxIn inputs to match the ReaRoute channel(s) you are sending from REAPER.

Repeat this step for each REAPER output you wish to route to AudioMulch. For more information on AudioMulch, visit www.audiomulch.com


Using Midi and Audio with Rearoute to a sampler or vsthosted instrument

This short article seeks to simplify and explain the setup involved in using a sampler outside Reaper on the same computer.


1. You'll need to install or have available Maple Midi, or Midi Yoke, both utilities that create virtual midi ports to transmit midi between programmes.

  • For this exercise we will assume Midi Yoke is available.

2. In Reaper insert a track. Open the I/O box, and select Midi Hardware settings. Choose from the list, and for our purpose of explanation, we'll choose MidiYoke (MY) 1. We are sending this midi to a multitimbral instrument or sampler that has 16 midi channels in, so we'll also choose 'Send to original channels.'

3. For the audio, we follow the instructions previously descibed, and insert an audio track, with input as Rearoute 1. For multi audio outs from a sampler, add audio tracks in Reaper, each one corresponding with a ReaRoute channel from your sampler.

4. Go to the sampler, and open midi devices. Select midi input port MY 1. At this point you may choose to, in a mutiltitimbral sampler, assign midi channels specific to instrument. An example of this would be: Piano-MidiYoke 1- Midi Channel 1. Guitar-MidiYoke 1-Midi Channel 2, and so on...

5. In the sampler, open audio devices, choose Rearoute Asio, and select Rearoute 1. Your sampler instrument output can be assigned at this point. Rearoute is 16 channels mono out, so if you have 8 instruments you want to play in the sampler, then you'll be able to assign 8 Rearoute stereo outs, 1 for each instrument.

6. You now have midi in and audio out for your sampler using MidiYoke, and Rearoute. Return to Reaper.

7. Using Rearoute with an external sampler gives you an additional opportunity to record audio and midi at the same time. In Reaper record arm both the midi and audio tracks, select the midi channel for the instrument in the sampler you want to play and record, and press record. As you play, you'll see both midi and audio being recorded. In the event that you wish to tweak the midi further, simply erase the wav you've just recorded, tweak the midi to your satisfaction, then press record only for the audio. (you have the midi already recorded and tweaked, so there's no need to record midi again.) Now, as you press record, you can simply watch as the midi 'plays' the sampler, and the audio is recorded in your Reaper audio track. For any further midi adjustment, simply repeat the tweaking process.

MidiYoke has 8 ports in/out with 16 midi channels for each port. For a vsthost running several multitimbral vsts, simply add midi tracks in Reaper, setting the midi hardware out in each midi track to one of the 8 Midiyoke ports. Assign the vsts' audio outs to one of the ReaRoute channels, with a corresponding audio track in Reaper.
