It's aimed more at new users than experienced ones, so don't expect miracles!
The idea is to get something out there quickly for new users and especially people coming across from other software, then maybe add more advanced stuff gradually over time.

Link's on the other thread, postage about $15 I think. Delivery was just a few days.
That was about the best deal I could find, though a couple of other places were much the same price. You're gonna love this thing.

Thanks for this.
Just one question - we now have the guide, the wiki and the help file - where do you look to find out stuff? Whats the point of all three? In what ways are they different?
OK thats three questions, but you get my drift!

Well I'd say ...
WIKI = On line reference material, good for looking up to find info on specific topics. Probably best for people who in general know their way around Reaper OK, but need to dig deeper into particular areas. Need to be on-line to use.
User Guide = mainly a learning aid, tutorial style, especially good for new (and relatively new) users, helps show how the bits and pieces fit together. Can use off line (handy if DAW not connected to net), or printed and bound as a book.
If you like, think of it as being the difference between an encyclopaedia and a text book.

the new user guide is AMAZING.
for anyone just starting out with REAPER, THIS is where you want to go.
It will guide you through all the basics, not just in a Simple way, but also in a way that will teach you the shortcuts and ergonomics of REAPER.
nicholas has combined sources from the wiki, and his own personal knowledge, and has assembled this comprehensive yet quick and simple guide.
I suggest EVERYONE download it and give it a run.

Yes, I'm still waiting to be told where I can upload this to - unfortunately I don't have a server where I can place it.

Thanks loads!
This is looking great guys! Excellent work. I am going to print it out and try to proofread it really good. You know... try to catch grammatical and spelling errors mostly. There are so many wonderful features in Reaper I don't feel qualified to address technical issues but if I spot something obvious I'll chime in.
I figure if a bunch of us proof this stuff really good, it will look better overall and make things easier to understand. Some of the manuals for un-mentionable DAW's I have used are HORRIBLE!
Again, great work fellas...

I think it's really important to have a link from the download page to the guide as soon as Justin has had a chance to approve the guide's content. Documentation is one of the things that separates the men from the boys in the world of programs, and this guide really does the job, along with the other 'take' on things provided by the wiki.

what we really also need is the wiki available as a downloadable searchable html/chm thing.
this way we have the power of reference and a setup guide.

Great opus Nicholas
Van Deimans Land?
What did you do to get sent there? (Bad joke):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Diemen's_Land
I will have a good look through when I get back from work.
All credit to you for this.
Oh and Malcolm J who laid down the hard yards at the beginning.
I know that in going through the WIKI after Jason has done it that we rely heavily on both the clarity of Reaper and Malcolm's input.
Wonder how Teej is going?
Jason any more pages and would you mind checking the thread to see if I have missed some?
I agree with Art that the documentation makes a lot of difference in getting to know something like this that people usually peruse in the privacy of their burrows without being able to work with others too much.

Gerry the wiki needs some help in the "workspace" section which I have basically made a skeleton form -- but it needs fleshing out. After this i am going to look into making a downloadable, searchable help file.

Almy, any specific comments from a new user like yourself in due course would be particularly useful. It's hard for those who are used to using this kind of stuff to remember the new user's perspective.

Just downloaded and had a quick scan through.
Looks GREAT!!! Nice work, fellas!
Seems to be laid out very nicely, and the document has a nice polished, professional look about it. That can go a long way to encouraging people to give Reaper a try.

I'll definitely do that. I've only read thru about 3.6 or so...so far. But I'll have time to really dig into it in the next day or so.
One easy example that would be good for guys like me...a bit more emphasis in the section that talks about saving files. By emphasis I mean..."If you don't do this and you clean your project history that .rpp you saved of that other song is now worthless!" It's those wierd technical aspects of what files to save where and when they'll be needed later and for what that really make it hard for true beginners.
If that's covered in more detail later, my apologies! But just an easy example that came to mind immediately. I'd love to be able to go straight to a section that says, 'this, this, this, and this will be needed if you ever want to use that .rpp in the future. And here is where you set up where they're saved.' In regards to backups and such. I think I have it down now, but I had help.

Nicholas, in 1.5 Starting Reaper, in the tip field, point #1:
1. Right click over the Reaper icon on your desktop
(it should then say, 'click on properties', to tie in to the next shortcut point)

You mention that to play the sample projects, the user has to install the lame_enc.dll. You do not need to install that dll for MP3 playback, you just need it for MP3 rendering. REAPER has native MP3 playback support included.

I've not had a chance to DL this yet, but thank you, nicholas, for your efforts! I'll pitch in when things slow down here a bit.
Reaper is a quality product. It deserves quality documentation!
