Default Opening Plugins while playing (FIXED)

I have been experiencing this problem alot lately, when I'm playing and I open up, or sometimes just play around with settings within a plugin REAPER crashes. Maybe it's plugin spacific, but it happens consistently with plparEQ:
http://www.refinedaudiometrics.com/p...-plpareq.shtml

and a couple others at times. I've noticed that if I turn off the ui, it does not crash REAPER when opening the plug.

Yep,

I also see this a lot. I'm using Sonitus EQ, and Sonitus Compressor. Also a few Waves plugins like UltramaximizerII or Renissance EQ. Not more than 7 or 8 total FX and about 12-16 audio tracks and I'm running on this system:

Dual-core AMD X2 4800+ 2.4Ghz
2048MB Ram
Win XP SP2
EMU 1212M using ASIO driver at 10ms latency
program HD (Maxtor 250GB SATAII)
audio HD (WD 250GB SATAII)
A/V turned off, un-needed background processes off

When I jump back and forth between track's FX during playback, the crashes will occur at random places. Sometimes even when stopped, just clicking on a track's FX button will crash Reaper.

Gets very frustrating when tweaking track FX during a final mix, I usually end up having to restart Reaper a good dozen times or more.

Strange though, it must be something in Reaper's code, because these same plugins do not crash at all using the same audio tracks in Cubase SX3 or Sonar 6.

I really hope this gets fixed in upcoming versions soon.

I can't duplicate with plpareq... err wait, maybe I can..

Ugh, the hard part is that the VST needs to be fixed.. and we can work around it, but then it'll make things less gapless, as well as give potential for deadlock. these VSTs need to be thread safe! Tell their authors to make sure opening the config can happen at the same time as audio processing.

Hmm, I was getting some crashes last night trying the sfz and sfz-x soundfont players, which was a new experience for me with Reaper - obviously I'm inclined to blame the new kid on the block first (sorry TerryW!) but let's see what happens with the new release.

Hi Justin,

Really appreciate your taking a look at this plugin issue.

Does the v1.802 update address all ill-behaved VST plugs or just that specific plparEQ plug?

In my post earlier up this thread I mentioned having similar frequent crashes with Sonitus
plugins. But after playing around a little more, I discovered that I can eliminate the crashing
if I get rid of the Waves Ultramaximizer L3 plugin. The rest of the plugs work fine, no crashes.

So could I assume that the Waves L3 is one of these "problem" VST plugins?

If so, I tried v1.802 and got no improvement, still crashes if the Waves L3 is used in a project.
I also tried the DX version of that plug and still got crashes.

Could the Waves L3 have different issues not addressed by the v1.802 update?

Hi Tony,

Waves plug-ins seem to have a lot of problems on multiprocessor systems.. Is yours?

Hi Justin,

Yes, well sort of, it's an AMD X2 4800+ dual core.
I guess that dual-core is the same as multi-processor?

I can believe that Waves plugins may have an issue with multi-processor/multi-core systems in general, but I wonder why these plugins are more stable in apps like Cubase or Sonar than they are in Reaper when run on the same hardware(multi-core).

Is there something that can be done in Reaper to get the same level of stability (i.e. no crashes) as these other apps for Waves plugins? I'd hate to give up using some of them as they are very nice plugins (and somewhat popular).

I suppose I could find alternatives, but would really like to know if Reaper could be made to perform solidly with them.

Thanks,
Tony

I'd be curious to see how the multicore/multiprocessing utilization on these other apps is. I know they are architected quite differently, and may not do quite as well as REAPER... anybody care to do some tests?

Justin,

Tests? Can you elaborate on this?

I only have the one machine (AMD 64 X2 4800+ dual core),
But I can run Cubase SX3 and Sonar if you need me to
measure something.

i must say, since 1.802 this one seems to be resolved!

but sometimes i still get crashes in these cases:

1. working sometime in a large project -> now load a previous saved version of the same project => crash (not reproducable, but happens from time to time)

2. tweaking sliders in surge vsti (happened today for the first time, not reproducable as well)

Just got around to testing this with the newest version (1.805)

Seems to be fixed here, REAPER does not crash when I open PLParEQ3 while playing!

there still seems to be an issue with this (although it got better with shortcircuit here).

just added glitch vst to a track while playback => crashed reaper (1.806)

tried to reproduce -> not possible

but from time to time you always get these crashes
