Definable And Multiple Track Defaults
ADDRESSED IN 1.72
having seen the minor request for seperate "audio" and "midi" tracks, it reminded me of something that i think would be excellent for workflow and wouldnt get in ANYONEs way.
Lets say you have a project in front of you, and you want to put a vsti in.
Now, you insert a track defualt, lets say, that was set up for audio. Well, you have to enable the right midi input, enable input monitoring or recording or whatever -- you may need to set up certain other things as well. It can slow things down a bit.
What if, this screen
turned into this screen:
...
you could set an indefinite amount of "default tracks" each with different inputs selected, different monitoring modes, different view options, perhaps even different fx chains -- imagine how nice it would be to want to record guitar, and have a default track already set up to accept input from the right inputs of your soundcard with the guitar plugged in, the right monitoring settings, and with Guitar rig already patched in!
you would have a menu, not like this:
but like this:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!
Imagine it -- go to record a vocal, get a track with the 1175 on it already, an eq and a reverb -- perhaps with the fx bypassed initially -- and then after recording, unbypass the fx and there you have a vocal effects chain ready to go!
Now some of you may use the Bloat worry technique when presented with such an amazingly innovative feature (j/k)
however, in that drop down box in the prefs, if you didnt make any new track defaults, you would only have one, and it would be just like we have it now. No rightwards arrow, no drop down, no drippy mess.
will post more about this in a sec.

And of course this brings up the idea of more possible options for track defaults, including fx chains, automation envelopes, (when we get it) midi learn presets, COLOR of the track, track naming, perhaps even some routing schemes or something. Again, this would be transparent to whoever is not using it, and i already know this is a feature at least ONE other reaperite wants for sure. (only one ive brought it up to)

Jason, what theme are you using? I'd kill to get that theme! It looks REALLY nice- sort of like Logic's.

Jason that is a pretty damn good FR
Is there a way of doing it now, with say a template or even a saved project? Is there a real need for more coding to achieve this?
Another way of asking the question is would it be easy to implement this by just having templates? I am curious because I do not know if what Jason has in mind, would add to what I do now.
Presently I have a project saved for home recording and one for the band. I have a couple with more complex effects arrays for doing computer music.

templates wouldnt do this as it would already have tracks present that you may or may not use. Its much better to start with a clean slate and be able to insert the tracks you want, configured how you like .

That's another good suggestion which seems to me to be in the spirit of the program's style. IMHO.

As long crtl+T pops up a new (normal) track that's fine
Could, however, be a real time saver, if you need to add tracks all with the same specific FX chains and whatnot for e.g. vox tracks like Jason already pointed out, and then add guitar tracks with different settings and rec inputs and stuff.
And then imagine this with those assignable knobs/faders on the TCP, requested in another thread, that would be so sweet... So this is IMO a step in the right direction.

+1, it's a very good idea !
ctrl+T to add track, and then selecting some user input presets (+fx etc.) from the input menu.

+1 seems like a nice way to streamline the recording process, Jason.

Definately +1, great idea.
Anything that speeds up workflow (especially during recording) is brilliant.
When im in the mood for creating, i want to do as little engineering/thinking as possible. The less i have to input to the DAW at this stage, the better.

+3 for me
I was just about to suggest this, but seen a link from another post.
I work with VSTis & Audio, so multiple template tracks would be a godsend and save me so much time!

Actually, I like that since I wanted way back to have default track assignments when you right click the TCP.
I have a MOTU 24 i/o, that has 24 ins and outs... When I start selecting a track, I get a list that takes up the entire screen.
I want to be able to pre-configure instances *and be able to label them*, and I'd want my midi inputs there as well so there isn't another/separate step to take for that. I've got different mic preamps always hooked up to different ins, di, a Line6 thingy, then I've got outputs that are hooked up to different things... it would be nice to be able to name them, have a default track color assigned to it *at first* - that way all of my guitar input tracks start off the same color - and of course name them (which I'm presuming you already can do by this version, I haven't had time to properly arrange things in Reaper as I'd like).
But,
BLOAT!!! IT'S JUST BLOAT!!! IT'S GOING TO SLOW IT DOWN!!!!! BRING BACK DOS TEXT!!!

+1000 I can't belive I missed this thread previously. The ideal of having template bothered me for a while because I felt locked in somehow and with this, you build as your need/inspiration takes you.
