Default Reaper's Local Help File - 2008

New and Improved.

Steps to Activate:
=============================================
1. Download chm help (7 MB) file https://stash.reaper.fm/628/REAPER_HELP.chm

2. Save the Help file in the Reaper folder "C:\Program Files\Reaper\"
delete the older chm version (if exists)

3. IMPORTANT STEP! - Enable the Help file
- In Explorer go to the folder "C:\Program Files\Reaper"
- Right-click the file REAPER_HELP.chm
- select "Properties"
- then click the button "UNBLOCK" (see screenshot below)

4. Use Help from Reaper
Run reaper, then click on the help menu "Help --> Documentation --> REAPER_HELP"

Please let me know what you think!

There's no unblock button in properties on my machine. I can see the file and a list of its contents in Reaper, but nothing on the right side. And my machine wants to contact microsoft HTML-something over net. Might be because I use win2k? I'm not very good at this computer stuff, so may be doing something wrong.

Still, thank you.

Nice! Thanks, Tod!

rj,
Not sure cause it's been ages since i've used 2k, but you might try right-clicking the file and chosing Open. I'm hoping you'll see a dialog which allows you to select something along the lines of 'Always Open This File'...

The problem was my impatience. It takes a few seconds to show up on the screen after denying win2k access to net.

Thanks to tj I tried it again and it works fine.

A reaperin' jolly this year to tj and all others on this fine forum!

Like the world class manual this is incredibly helpful!! I once did a kind of FAQ for EnergyXT1, and know what work is behind such a beauty. Thank you so much!

I can't seem to unblock this on WinXP SP1. Is there an alternative help reader to MS's that might do the trick? Otherwise, any chance of putting an unblocked version up for download?

Maybe the FIRST thing you should do is install SP2!
So your machine will stop acting as a mail bomber, virus-spreader and so on on the internet
and then maybe the helpfile will work also....

No need to be rude, man. Some people, such as myself, keep their DAW boxes isolated from internet, have enough common sense to stay away from the seedy side of the web, keep all machines behind a good hardware firewall, and to do an AV scan on attachements even if they are from a trusted source (and obviously delete them if they are not). As such, an SP1 machine would not do any of the undesirable things you mentioned.

If you are running SP1, there should be no need to 'unblock' the file. I believe that is a function of the Windows Security Center which did not make its appearance until SP2. As such, you should be able to skip the unblock step and go.

I am not rude, I just can't get these ideas of some people "I won't install Service Packs, they will change my system or slow down something". For what ARE service packs published??! There has to be an idea behind it, or not?
Also a firewall will not always help against security leaks in the browser. OK, you can separate a machine from the internet, but most people don't, and then they complain how unsafe Windows is.
And then people say "i have a firewall / virusscanner / no connection" - so why are all these bots, viruses and so on around.....?

I am sure that you are not a rude person; however, your words in that particular post came across as rude; leastwise from my perspective they sounded rude. Since that was not your intention, then I offer you my apology for so naming it.

@ Ric the obscene:
The unblock button does not appear in SP1 and the new help content does not appear either. I have the msi 3.1 update installed and have no compatibility problems whatsoever with any apps and as you guessed my DAW is quarantined from the net.

This might seem like a dumb question, but you have copied it to your Reaper folder right? The default folder for this is C:\Program Files\Reaper.

Yep - the help opens up in the MS reader BUT only the tree structure is visible, the actual content of all the pages is invisible.

Same problem here. Is it possible you need internet access to view the content of the file? Just a thought because I don't have my DAW connected to the net...

Default Awesome! About time!

Thank you so much!

This is really nice. It beats the living snot out of constantly having to use pdf and search. Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I've always liked the little chm help files much better than futzing with pdf's.

Not having the standard chm help was one of my biggest issues with Reaper, believe it or not. With so many programs to constantly learn, bouncing between various OS's, and so much documentation to plow through, having quick familiar access to get what I need and continue with the work flow is hugely important in any software I use these days.

Anyways, for me your help file comes up under the Help, Documentation, menu in both Vista HP and XP2 and, at least for me so far, seems to be working just like it should . . . well, except for one little detail:

Is there a way to get the chm help to pop up (I'm using both Vista and XP2) by hitting F1, i.e., the standard Windoze help key? It'd be nice not to have to go through the menu, and to be able access to the help file with one familiar keystroke.

It's less of an issue for me as I get more familiar with Reaper, but I'd like people who assist me when recording to be able to find help in the familiar place. If nothing else, it'd help convert 'em to Reaper.

Justin: I'd recommend putting an F1 access to it and bundling it to install with the new Reaper installers. It really makes the whole program much more Windows-conforming. Funny how little stuff like this can make such a big difference to end-users.

You're welcome. The main reason I created the help file was to make the info in the wiki manual more easily accessible.
As for your request... You may want to post that in the Feature Request area of the forum so that Justin would be more likely to see it.
Also, It would be really cool if we could get context-sensitive help!

Default Problems with XP SP3

Looks really great, thanks, but I am having similar problems to those described others here.

I am using a new install of XP with SP3 applied.

I do not have an option to unblock the file in the file's properties.

When I select Reaper_Help in Reaper I get the message "Microsoft HTML help executable has encountered a problem and needs to close."

If I click on the link for more information about the error I get the following message:

Error signature
AppName: hh.exe AppVer: 5.2.3790.2453 ModName: urlmon.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.3264 Offset: 0003b5ce

Help crashes, but it doesn't bring down Reaper entirely....

Probably.

It seems to require internet access at this point. If I open it without internet access.. the pages don't show for me at all. So it does eventually show for you?

Yes eventually - takes ages though - like its checking for a net connection first and only then loading from the HD

This might work a bit better if it was in PDF format eventually.

It would be better to me if it just worked without needing the internet connection or activation which seems unnecessary. I'm desperate for some usable Reaper documentation and pdf file are not as easy to use and chm I find.

Are you sure you need Internet connection? After unblocking the file, it seems to work locally here...

Thing is that block button in the screenshot just doesn't appear when I click properties on either of my computers so I've not been able to unblock them. However on my PC that is connected to the internet it still loads fine but on the one that isn't it doesn't so that's what I'm going by.

Default Help file in linux and audio input in Reaper 2.44

Hey y'all, I'm having a couple of problems:
1.unblocking the .chm help file in Linux Sabayon 3.5 KDE 3.5x wine 1.1
2. Getting the audio input to Reaper 2.44 working under same OS
I'm new to Sabayon and new to Reaper but quite computer savvy.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Default 1 problem resolved

I fixed the audio input problem but I'm still to get the .chm help file to unlock in wine 1.1, has anyone got a fix for this or a command line perhaps.....
